๐ World Ozone Day 2025
Ozone Layer on Track to Recover by Mid-Century
๐ Key Highlights from the WMO Ozone Bulletin 2024
-
The ozone layer is expected to return to 1980s levels by the middle of this century.
-
The 2024 Antarctic ozone hole was smaller compared to recent years, peaking at 46.1 million tonnes on September 29.
-
Lower depletion this year was partly due to natural atmospheric conditions, but long-term recovery reflects the success of global action.
๐ 40 Years of Global Cooperation
This year’s bulletin was released on World Ozone Day, which also marks the 40th anniversary of the Vienna Convention, the first global treaty dedicated to protecting the ozone layer.
-
Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General:
“Forty years ago, nations came together, guided by science and united in action. Today, the ozone layer is healing. This reminds us that when nations heed scientific warnings, progress is possible.”
-
The Montreal Protocol, born from the Vienna Convention, has already phased out over 99% of ozone-depleting substances, such as chemicals used in refrigeration, air conditioning, firefighting foams, and aerosols.
๐งช Science for Action
-
Celeste Saulo, WMO Secretary-General, linked the progress to this year’s theme:
“From Science to Global Action”, aligned with WMO’s 75th anniversary slogan “Science for Action.”
-
Matt Tully, WMO Scientific Advisory Group:
“Despite the success of the Montreal Protocol, monitoring must continue. Ongoing vigilance is essential to track both ozone and the substances that threaten it.”
๐ฑ Why It Matters
-
Recovery of the ozone layer means less exposure to harmful UV radiation, lowering risks of skin cancer, cataracts, and ecosystem damage.
-
The achievement demonstrates the power of multilateral cooperation, showing that global policies guided by science can reverse environmental damage.
✅ Takeaway: The ozone layer is healing — a direct result of decades of international collaboration. But continued monitoring and commitment remain crucial to protect this progress.
